What is e-Invoicing?

e-Invoicing (electronic invoicing) is a system in which B2B invoices are reported by businesses to the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) and authenticated electronically, for further use on the GST portal — for E-Way Bill generation and GST return filing. It was introduced in October 2020.

What is e-Invoicing?

How an e-Invoice is generated

  • Bill as Usual – Create your GST invoice in ValueSoft.
  • Upload to IRP – ValueSoft uploads the invoice details to the IRP.
  • Get IRN & QR – After validation the IRP returns a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a signed QR code, which ValueSoft prints on the invoice.
  • Auto Returns – The details flow to your GSTR-1 and the buyer's GSTR-2A/2B, and can be used for the E-Way Bill.

FAQ

Your Questions Answered

Who has to generate e-Invoices?

Every GST-registered business whose aggregate turnover crossed ₹5 crore in any financial year since 2017-18 must issue e-Invoices for B2B supplies (in force since 1 August 2023). Businesses with turnover of ₹10 crore and above must also report each invoice to the IRP within 30 days of the invoice date.

What is the difference between regular invoicing and e-Invoicing?

The government portal does not create your invoices. You keep creating GST invoices in your software; the software uploads the details to the IRP for validation and authentication.

Is registration needed for e-Invoicing?

Yes, you must register on the e-Invoice portal first. Follow our step-by-step e-Invoice registration guide for ValueSoft.

What is an Invoice Reference Number (IRN)?

A unique code generated by the IRP for every e-Invoice, based on the supplier's GSTIN, the invoice number and the financial year. It is different from your own invoice number.

Can an e-Invoice be edited or cancelled?

It cannot be edited — ValueSoft locks the invoice once the e-Invoice is generated. It can be cancelled within 24 hours on the IRP; cancel it in ValueSoft too. The same invoice number cannot be reused.

Is it mandatory to print the QR code and IRN?

Yes. An invoice without the IRN and QR code is treated as invalid. The QR code must be readable; its size and position are up to you. The acknowledgement number and date need not be printed.

What does the e-Invoice QR code contain?

Supplier and buyer GSTINs, invoice number, date and value, number of line items, the HSN of the main item, the IRN and its generation date.

Can I generate e-Invoices in bulk?

Yes. Select several bills in ValueSoft and generate e-Invoices for all of them in one go.

Is e-Invoicing needed for a bill of supply?

No. e-Invoicing applies to tax invoices; make separate invoices for taxable and exempt supplies.

How can I verify an e-Invoice QR code?

Use the verify-QR app linked from einvoice1.gst.gov.in under Help → Tools → Verify QR.

What does ValueSoft charge for e-Invoicing?

Nothing extra — e-Invoice is included in the Lite, Plus and Max plans. See the pricing page.
